Heron

The dark clouds are ominous, and the chances of a walk - or at least a dry one - seem slim.  Still, ever the optimists, we set off for a short walk near Sychnant. I’m hoping to find some dragonflies that are flying rather than drowning this time.

The rain in fact, stays away, and there are even moments were the sun shines warmly. Sitting by the lake, the flashes of blues and greens and  reds are few and far between, there one second and gone the next - always before I’ve even found a focus. The best I manage is a so-so capture of a pair of common darters.

It’s not looking hopeful, until that is, I spot a heron wading through the rushes on the far side of the lake.  I know there’s water there, but here it looks as if this stately bird is strolling through a meadow, red grasses and pink heather providing a rather different background.

Inevitably, he doesn’t stay for long - though long enough to pose for far too many shots - before he lifts his wings and soars into the distance.
