Castello dei Conti Guidi

A different view of Poppi castle that dominates the communication routes of the Casentino. Dating from the ninth or tenth century it is a symbol of the dominance of the Conti Guidi for at least four hundred years. Mainly restructured in the 15th century (a taller tower was partly destroyed by lightning) it is in remarkably good nick. An austere expression of cold power, if you ask me. Much softened by the delightful open air cafe next door to it.
