The new generation
This is my favourite among the camellias in our garden. It was here when we moved in, eight years ago.
The most positive thing that happened today was watching the final of the women’s US open. A brilliant match, between two teenagers who we hadn’t even heard of a few months ago. Britain’s Emma Radukanu won, defeating Canadian Leylah Fernandez. Neither was seeded, and Emma was given a wildcard, not to the main draw but just to get into the qualifiers. She is the first qualifier ever to win a grand slam title, and the first Brit to win a grand slam since Virginia Wade won Wimbledon in 1977.
This is surely the new generation. It’s going to be exciting to watch both their careers develop.
