A host...
...of golden daffodils...
Found these this morning when I opened the blinds in the study...was surprised to see them to be honest, the weather has been awful, but perhaps the fact that I've not opened the blinds in over a week could also contribute to my surprise.
I like daffodils...can't explain why...they just seem like a happy flower...a bunch of daffodils will always make me smile.
Eons ago, whilst still at school, I was in the very prestigious 6th Form Play - Twelfth Night. Every night on my usual run to school to get ready for the performance I would pass a huge lawn full of daffodils. And every night the old guy who owned the lawn would be waiting for me to run by with a freshly picked daff in his hand for me. "Break a leg" he'd shout as I ran by grasping at the flower. "Not when I'm running" I'd shout back.
He came to see the play on the last night. A huge bunch of daffs in his arms to give to all of us involved.
Someone asked him if he was related to any of us. He explained that for the last six years he'd waved to a small group of school kids as they walked by his house on their way to and from school. He was alone with no grandchildren. He said he'd come to think of them as his grand kids and was pleased to be waved back at twice a day. He said that he was also very grateful when the same kids had shovelled snow from his drive way a few times too.
Sometimes friendship can come in very unexpected places and ways. He was a lovely old man, his daffodils live on in my memory.
That is all.
