The aqueduct.

We walked along a bit of the Union Canal towpath today. A few fishermen and some cyclists, quiet otherwise. Lovely autumnal scent off the vegetation, some of the trees starting to turn.

This is the tallest and longest aquaduct in Scotland - most of it’s 810’ (243m) stretches ahead in the photograph. I have cycled along the cobbled towpath many times, water on one side and high drop to the river through the railings, it needs concentration, (journal photo 2 March 2021 is aqueduct from the river).

Hugh Baird designed the aqueduct, with assistance from Thomas Telford, famous Scottish civil engineer who designed many infrastructure projects in his day. It was built during 1819-1821. It has a cast iron trough to channel the water along rather than a stone structure with a puddle clay lined trough. It’s a Category A listed building.

Our younger son and partner came for Sunday dinner (on a Monday!). Older son and wife drove back from England, couple of traffic delays on the way. They’re all back to work tomorrow after September weekend Monday off.

The 4 Nations Chief Medical Officers have advised in favour of offering a Covid19 vaccination to 12-15 year olds. Health Ministers are now to consider their advice.
