The Road We’re Traveling On
We were appalled and disgusted to read this obituary today in a southern Oregon newspaper. You can’t argue or debate with the soul who wrote this - sympathy to them in their loss - but to quote Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird, “...with minds of their caliber.”
It is one thing to think and write this; it is another thing for the paper to publish it. It fuels the racist, anti-Asian sentiment throughout the country. Where does the paper draw the line between the racist vitriol, and a higher bar of journalistic responsibility?
The most resonant tune on tonight’s walk was Simon and Garfunkel’s “American Tune.” This line struck home:
“Still when I think of the road we’re traveling on, I wonder what’s gone wrong. I can’t help but wonder what’s gone wrong.”
