Grain Tower Battery
I took a trip out onto the Isle of Grain on the North Kent Coast for some fresh air and a walk along the English Coast path in this area.
In the early to mid-19s there were widespread fears that the imperial rivalry between Britain and France could result in a French invasion or naval incursion along the River Thames, resulting in the construction of military defenses along this coastline, including this tower at the mouth of the River Medway protecting the important Chatham and Sheerness dockyards. It was altered and used in the world wars to support quick-firing guns, but was decommissioned in 1956 and is now derelict.
At low tides, such is this, one can walk along the old causeway to access the tower, but you need your wellies so not one for me today.
