Boab tree

One of the desert’s great icons.

These trees have a thick trunk capable of storing water.

In the dry season they loose all their leaves.
Soon this one will sprout leaves heralding the upcoming wet season.

Their large smooth nuts are ideal for carving. Fine examples of which can be found in indigenous art galleries.

This particular tree was in the grounds of a large art gallery on the outskirts of an indigenous community at Derby WA.

A lot of the indigenous communities have been closed to outsiders since the beginning of Covid as a preventative health measure.

WA has had the least Covid in the country. Their isolation, sparse population and strict border control policies have served them well so far. While two of the Eastern states continue to battle outbreaks, WA remains essentially Covid free and the population go about their lives relatively normally..
