One Careful Owner
. . . and maybe a few others who were a little less caring.
[EDIT]
A little research has revealed that this area was formerly known as 'The Pans' - one of many such places around the Forth Estuary. Locally sourced coal was used to boil pans of seawater to extract the salt, a valuable commodity for use as a food preservative.
That was taking place at this site in the mid to late 18th Century and this house was one of four involved in that industry here. The ruins of the other three, being closer to the shore, have mostly succumbed to coastal erosion.
