Fishing Shiel

As part of the Heritage Open Days this was open to the public this weekend so I went along to view it this afternoon.

Grade ll listed and probably dating from the 18th century this was one of several shiels associated with the salmon fishing industry. It is now the only unmodernised one which was still in use in living memory. Originally thatched, it’s divided in two by a stone wall with sleeping quarters one side and nets and catch the other. The trough was for storing ice to keep the fish fresh.

A good night out last night…great music and company…well attended but not uncomfortably so. There were two blues bands playing…equally good but very different repertoires. A lie in today in readiness for Grandma duties tomorrow!
