Girl with Roses
Painted by Lucien Freud in 1947. Of his first wife Kitty, while pregnant, so hardly a girl. He was only 25, but it already shows his trademark fascination with the minutest detail eg. you can see every hair, and the reflection of the windows in her eyes.
I went to the exhibition at the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath this afternoon, which was fantastic. Three artists, also John Minton and Adrian Ryan.
This shows the eyes don’t see in the same way as the camera - when I was looking at the painting my eyes - or perhaps my brain - overrode the reflections and I didn’t notice them. But they are a bit intrusive in the photo. They had the front door open, the air con on, and a one way system. Reassuring.
Afterwards we went for coffee and cake in the Bridge Café on Pulteney Bridge, and I took a quick blip of the view from our table, which is the extra.
