Banksy in Bristol

More exploring of Bristol today - it’s a vibrant city with a rich interesting history. The harbour-side has been redeveloped with nice walking spaces, cafes, museums and galleries. In 1497 John Cabot set sail from here in the belief that a short cut to the East lay to the West. He landed his ship The Matthew (a replica is at the harbour side) at Newfoundland and so “discovered” America! This brought wealth to Bristol through the trade of tobacco, sugar and slaves.

There’s street art all over the city and Banksy is probably the name most synonymous with Bristol although ‘his’ identity is still unknown. In 2009 he collaborated with Bristol Museum and Art Gallery on the ‘Bristol versus Banksy’ exhibition. The sculpture in the photo is the most well known from that exhibition - it’s known as ‘paint pot angel’. Banksy donated it to the museum and it still stands in the museum hall today.
