Model village
In the 1790s the British Fisheries Society commissioned the architect Thomas Telford to build a fish port in Loch Bay, Waternish. Due to the lack of enthusiasm of the local crofters (allegedly!) and the logistical problems caused by the remote location, only half the village was completed and by 1837 the British Fisheries Society had cut their losses and sold the rest of the land they owned.
That is how the village of Stein was born and why the area is now a conservation area. You can see the village hugging the shoreline in this blip. The islands you can see on the horizon are the Western Isles
That is your history lesson for today - hope you enoy the view!
