Old Chester - 8

Two for the price of one today. I had forgotten about this wooden carving on Eastgate Street which marks the premises of an old pub called the Crown and Glove which closed in the 1920s. The gloved hand itself has a long history and reference the fact that a wooden glove used to be hung at the corner of St Peter's Church to indicate the start of Chester's fairs and markets.

As a bonus I'm also fascinated by the old burglar alarm above the sign and wonder when that dates from.
