What is a diet?

So it was that F (she would wish to remain anonymous) spotted Teddy yesterday morning, she had not seen him for a few weeks, and announced in a loud voice:
“He’s fat!”
OMG! He has been with us less than three months and a quick weigh in today revealed he has put on three-quarters of a pound since we got him from Glasgow Cat protection.
He wouldn’t eat at first so as soon as he started eating we just kept feeding him.
 
So Teddy goes on a diet.
