Punting on the Stour
This trip was a long time in the waiting. We went to see the doctor turned author Adam Kay at the Marlowe Theatre well over two years ago. After the performance we went to the Foundry Brewery on Stour Street for a quick drink.
We liked the venue and the beer so much that we agreed to come by train for the day so we could take full advantage of the beer and food.
That pandemic got in the way as did other things. Even last Tuesday, with the weather warm and sunny we decided to go cycling rather than travel to Canterbury. Today though was the day.
We enjoyed walking around the city following the Marlowe in Canterbury trail taking us past many places associated with the playwright Christopher Marlowe. Most interesting, especially the conspiracy theory that Marlowe and Shakespeare may be one and the same person!
Our walk took us into the Greyfriars Friary alongside one of the many branches of the River Stour. First time we’ve visited this part of the city. A world of difference to the High Street just beyond the buildings.
The main event didn’t disappoint. It’s a family owned and run brewery and restaurant with a intriguing choice of super beers and excellent food. We sampled Foundry IPA, Red and Torpedo, Foundry Man’s Gold and rounding it off with a very small glass of 9.5% Itzamma Porter which was delightful. All the beers went well with the steak and ale pie and the slow cooked beer based brisket.
