What's happened?

Is there an aubergine expert out there? The first attempt at growing them and we only had 3, all looking like this. I know there are several different varieties but these were Black Beauties which should look like ordinary aubergines as bought in the supermarket. What have we done and are they edible (never like to waste anything ;-) )?
