Magnificent Malhamdale

Our final day of walking was full of  geological treasures. Fortunately, one  of our group had a degree in geology and physical  geography, and was able to point  out, and explain the remarkable  features of the limestone formations in Malhamdale.
The coach dropped us off in Malham village (much quieter today than last Saturday)and first we walked to Janet's Foss, a most attractive waterfall.
Then we went to look at Gordale Scar (main ) a tremendous ravine caused by glacial ice from several ice ages. We walked over the moors along the Pennine Way to Malham Tarn, where it was cold and windy, and we had a brief  lunch stop. Then it was on to the limestone pavement above Malham Cove . The extra shows the  clints (slabs of limestone  ) and the grykes (deep fissures) which give the formation its name. Then it was a tricky climb down rather damp and slippery steps beside the  cove, before walking back into  Malham village.
