Isles of Scilly day 6
Beautiful sunny day, we went to the Higher Moors nature reserve at Porth Hellick. A lovely area of reeds, a lake, and then a sandy beach. We wandered all over, then sat on the beach in the warm sun. Then one of us went for a swim, but it wasn’t me:). It’s was terribly cold apparently.
On our way back to get the bus, we stopped off at one of the hides. Friendly people in there with a big telescope told us there was a glossy ibis walking round the edge of the lake. So we accidentally saw the very rare bird everyone was looking for. And it was very beautiful, with a huge curved beak and a black and dark red back. It should be in Africa or Southern Europe I believe. Also saw a water rail and a heron, but they were of no account apparently, when there’s a glossy ibis around. As we went up to the bus stop some keen bird watchers rushed past us saying - have you seen the ibis? “Oh yes” we said. :-))
