Stand-off

A ewe guards her newborn twin lambs as a southern black-backed gull stands over her afterbirth that is hidden in the long grass. A moment later the gull took off with a long strand of bloodied membrane.

You can always tell when lambing is going on by the big gulls circling, awaiting their chances. I guess they do a good job of keeping the grass clean. However, they have been known to attack the lambs.

The extra shot is of another ewe and her even younger twins. Warning: the image may disturb some people.
