HISTORIC UCKFIELD TOUR: BRIDGE COTTAGE
This fine building is Bridge Cottage – thought to have been built in the 15th century.
Studies have shown the cottage dates back to around 1436. Between 1500 and 1900 the cottage was inhabited by several local families including local merchants.
In October 2014 the Heritage Lottery Fund granted one million pounds to enable the restoration of the cottage.
Several times I've mentioned to my New Dad that I wouldn't mind living in Bridge Cottage – it's very handy for the shops, and the sound of running water might help me sleep at night – but New Dad says we 'couldn't afford it' – which is what he says about everything!
Actually, instead of helping me sleep, the sound of running water might have me going to the loo all night…
Now we shall head off up the High Street towards Church Street, which was at the heart of the original settlement of Uckfield, near the medieval chapel.
It's quite a steep hill, so you may like to stop off at the Tapas Bar, Subway or Pizza Hut for refreshments, or pop into one on the many Charity Shops [Thrift Stores] to regain your breath before we continue…
