MATCHES
It's been blowing a hooley this afternoon with intermittent heavy showers of rain. Let's keep our fingers crossed for the wind to cease overnight.
Sophia, Isabella and their mum were here today which meant we were constantly on the go while mum was cutting fabric for a quilt for little Isabella.
Thanks to laurie54 for hosting the interesting challenges this month.
Matches, as we know them - friction matches, were invented in the 19th century by John Walker, by accident, in 1826. He started selling his “friction lights” to locals in 1827 and they quickly took off. Walker did not take out a patent on his invention. His invention was quickly copied by Samuel Jones of London, who started selling “Lucifers” in 1829. The definitive modern match was born in mid-19th century by Swedish chemist Gustaf Erik Pasch. His “safety match” design moved the phosphorus away from the match itself and onto safe striking surface, enabling creation of much safer, easier to use, and cheaper matches.
There is more, interesting information in relation to the development of matches if you have time to google.
