The London Underground

This week MonoMonday, hosted by Laurie59 - Many thanks Laurie and for such fascinating challenges - is inventions of the 19 century i.e. the 1800s.

Today we made our way home and part of it was on the underground, a tube from Victoria to Euston.  This was taken on that journey!

The first underground was built in use in 1883.

Here you can see  a drawing of Baker Street station 1883 - 1869!  I love this as it’s a station I went through so often as a child to go to my secondary school, near Euston, and then to university as I lived at home and travelled to Mile End every day!

In 1843 the Thames Tunnel was completed and opened. It was designed by Marc Brunel (Isambard Kingdom’s father) and was the first tunnel ever to be built under a navigable river. It’s now part of the London Overground line.
