Dishwasher perfected by a woman
Inventions of the 19th century … the dishwasher!
The first dishwasher was invented by Joel Houghton in 1850. It was a wooden box that used a hand-turned wheel to splash water onto dirty dishes. Ten years later L.A. Alexander added a geared mechanism to spin a rack of dishes through a tub of water.
But the modern-day dishwasher is due to Josephine Cochran. Fed up with broken dishes, she decided to design and build a machine that would handle the task faster and more carefully. Her machine was the first to use water pressure to clean the dishes. She was granted a patent in 1886.
Her dishwashers became popular with the hospitality industry but they didn’t become popular in homes until the 1950s.
Thank you Mrs Cochran you have saved by hands all these years!
