Modern rocketry begins
In 1898 a Russia school teacher Konstantin Tsiolkovsky proposed the idea of space exploration by rocket. He suggested the idea of liquid propellants for rockets in order to achieve greater range, stating that the speed and range of rockets were limited only by the exhaust velocity of escaping gases. According to grc.nasa.gov he has been called the father of modern rockets
