After the rain

Scotland trip day 14 John O’ Groats.

After 24 hours of rain we wake to a lovely sunny morning. A great morning for sightseeing so we head along the coast to John O’ Groats which lies on Great Britain’s northeastern tip we have a lovely walk around taking in the sites and of course had to have a photo taken at the famous finger post, we walk past the recently renovated John O’Groats hotel and the colourful extension.

We take our leave and head towards Dunnet Head the true Northern most point in Great Britain, along the way we stop at John O’ groats Mill which dates back from the mid 18 th century probably earlier. The mill is linked to the mill cottage by the 17th. century Cromwellian bridge and is believed to be the oldest military bridge in the Highlands.

Our next stop is Gill bay where we see seals and a cormorant. We then take a slight detour to visit the Castle of May a favourite home of the  late Queen Mother.

Back on the road again we make  a steady uphill climb until we finally arrive at Dunnet head, where we see the magnificent lighthouse and towering cliffs normally home to many seabirds but now out of season.

After a quick stop for fuel we head back to base and a walk on the beach, tonight we had hoped to see the Aurora Borealis but too much cloud .
