Isambard Kingdom Brunel

The photograph in this book is the most famous taken of the celebrated Victorian engineer and shipbuilder, a shot familiar to many people.

The massive chains behind him were used during the launch of one of his ships. On the left is a short biography.

I was amazed, and then outraged, to read that one school history text-book reproduces this iconic photograph of !KB with his cigar airbrushed out - as the original image might encourage young students of history to take up smoking!
