Fanad Lighthouse
Today's the day .................... for somewhere special
We had hoped to spend our 48th wedding anniversary somewhere nice - but we had no idea that it would turn out to be quite such a special place.
Fanad Lighthouse is the most northerly of Ireland's lighthouses and stands on a rocky headland between Lough Swilly and Mulroy Bay. The present lighthouse dates to 1886 - but there was an earlier one, first lit in 1817. Our bit of accommodation, originally occupied by the Head Lightkeeper and his family, was warm and very comfortable - with stunning views over Lough Swilly.
The best thing is that Fanad is still very much a working lighthouse - albeit a fully automated one. We just kept an occasional watchful eye on the light towering above us, just to make sure that all was well . . . . . . .
