4th Earl of Hopetoun
This was our last day in Edinburgh and there was plenty of time for a walk before heading to the airport for our flight to Birmingham. Our walk around the New Town took in Dundas House, the registered office of the Royal Bank of Scotland. The main banking hall built in 1857 has a magnificent domed ceiling which nearly made it as my blip, but instead I have opted for this statue outside the front of the building.
It is of John Hope, 4th Earl of Hopetoun, who was an officer in the Napoleonic Wars and a governor of the bank. He is depicted in Roman clothing and is very noticeably taller than his horse. It is said that the sculptor, Thomas Campbell, was not paid for his work because of this gaff :-)
