The Opportunity to Play
Sunny but breezy all day with tons of fluffy clouds, perfect weather for a soccer game. After breakfast, we headed to Washington, DC to watch Brooklyn’s soccer game. They have converted some of the former parking areas for RFK stadium into very nice artificial turf soccer and baseball fields. The park is well kept. B’s team won, I believe the score was 7-1. Since we had a nice lead at half time, the coach let B play offense for the second half. They are still leading the league with two remaining games. You can see the happiness on every young lady’s face. They love soccer! This was their post game “silly” photo. B is stretched out in the front center of the shot. My original plan was to just blip the stadium for derelict Sunday but the deterioration isn’t obvious unless you get close up shots. I took the following excerpts about this derelict stadium on Wikipedia: “Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium (commonly known as RFK Stadium), is a defunct multi-purpose stadium in Washington, D.C. It is located about two miles (3 km) due east of the U.S. Capitol building, near the west bank of the Anacostia River and next to the D.C. Armory. RFK was one of the first major stadiums designed to host both baseball and football. It opened in 1961 (60 years ago) with a construction cost of $24 million. It was closed in 2017. RFK Stadium was home to a National Football League team (Redskins), two Major League Baseball (MLB) teams (Senators and Nationals), five professional soccer teams, two college football teams, a bowl game, and a USFL team. It hosted five NFC Championship games, two MLB All-Star Games, men's and women's World Cup matches, nine men's and women's first-round soccer games of the 1996 Olympics, three MLS Cup matches, two MLS All-Star games, and numerous American friendlies and World Cup qualifying matches. It hosted college football, college soccer, baseball exhibitions, boxing matches, a cycling race, an American Le Mans Series auto race, marathons, and dozens of major concerts and other events. Due to maintenance costs, in September 2019, officials announced plans to demolish the stadium, which will begin in 2022, and cost $20 million.[7]”. We stopped for a shrimp taco late lunch on the way home. After finishing a few tasks, we are taking the rest of the day off. Thanks for stopping by. So glad you enjoyed the mums. Stay safe. “Do you know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play.” - Mike Singletary
