thank Mary Phelps Jacob... The first modern bra to receive a patent was the one invented in 1913 by a New York socialite named Mary Phelps Jacob.

History of the brasserie
Here are other points in the history of the brasserie worth noting:
In 1875, manufacturers George Frost and George Phelps patented the "Union Under-Flannel," an undergarment with no bones, eyelets, and no laces or pulleys.
In 1893, a woman named Marie Tucek patented the "breast support". The device contained separate breast pockets and straps that went over the shoulder, fastened with hook-and-eye fasteners.
In 1889, corset maker Herminie Cadolle invented the "Welfare" or "Bien-être", a bra-like device sold as a health aid. The support of the corset for the breasts was pushed up from below. Cadolle changed the chest rest down to the shoulders.
World War I dealt a fatal blow to the corset when in 1917 the US War Industries Board called on women to stop buying corsets. About 28,000 tons of metal was released!
In 1928, a Russian immigrant named Ida Rosenthal founded Maidenform. Ida was responsible for grouping women into categories of bust size (cup sizes).
