Nepal? No, Brisbane.
I got the train to Brisbane today to visit a sick friend. Passing through the city on the way back to the station, I had a quick walk along South Bank where I blipped these blippers. Here's a little background:-
Brisbane's Nepal Peace Pagoda is one of only three outside Nepal (the others
are in Munich and Osaka). It was built as part of World Expo '88, hosted by
Brisbane.
80 tonnes of indigenous Nepalese timber from the Terai jungle forest of Nepal
were carted to Kathmandu where 160 Nepalese families worked for two years,
crafting its diverse elements. These were shipped to Australia in three
containers, where they were assembled in only a few days at the Expo site by
a handful of Australian workers under Nepalese supervision.
Three-levelled, with a beautiful tea house on the second level, it quickly
became one of the most visited and photographed Pavilions at the Expo.
Towards the end of the Expo the Friends of the Pagoda established a petition
to keep it in Brisbane after the conclusion of the Expo, with some 70,000
signatories.
It remains a 'must-visit' (And must-blip) feature on Brisbane's South Bank.
