Globe-trotting cat

I came home today - another long and rather tedious rail journey. Left my sister's at 9.30 this morning, train to Waterloo, Underground to Euston, train to Glasgow Central, walk to Glasgow Queen Street, train to Oban, home by 8.50 this evening. 

On the concourse outside Euston station is this statue of scientist and navigator Matthew Flinders (1774-1814), who is credited with popularising the name Australia, and was apparently the first person to circumnavigate the continent and map South Australia’s coastline. The statue, by sculptor Mark Richards, shows Flinders leaning over a chart of Australia, dividers in hand, accompanied by his faithful pet cat Trim. Did Trim really travel with him? I don't remember seeing it before, though it's been there for some years. I must look him up!

The train journey to Glasgow was totally ruined by a noisy Mum with four children. The more the youngest howled, the more she shouted at her, so the more she howled. I think it ruined the journey for the whole carriage. The poor kid only wanted some attention, but her Mum spent the four and a half hours playing on her phone! 

Had a nice chat with an American couple on the train to Oban - they had flown over from Virginia overnight en route to Iona.

Good to be away, but even better to be home!
