Broad-billed Hummingbird
I've previously posted a male broad-billed hummingbird. He was the stout but super colorful bird on a stick back on the 13th. This is a female. She really lacks the brilliant color of the male and rather than a mostly orange bill, she has a mere touch of orange at the base of hers. Besides that slight bit of orange, other identifying markers are the short bill, the black "cheek" patch and a somewhat curved white streak behind the eye. Also, check out the blue on its tail feathers. If you can spot those it's a clear giveaway. Operative word is "if." It has taken me a decade to be able to identify most female hummingbirds, and in flight sometimes I still struggle. I thrive on the challenge.
