Day 1 Kaikoura ride
An overnight ride to Kaikoura with a lunch stop at Picton with the ferry from the North Island in the traffic was heavier heading South. My intention was always to stop at Ohau Stream which has changed dramatically after the November 14th 2016 earthquake.
The quake struck at 1202 and lasted 2 minutes which if you want to appreciate how long that is stand on one leg for two minutes!
It was a 7.8 Magnitude quake and being just 15 km deep it was transmitted for some distance, I live 260 kms by road away from the quake centre and my house shook for the full two minutes. Some of the pictures show white rock this used to be under water but was uplifted by 2 metres and the whole South Island moved 30 mm closer to the North Island.
Back to Ohau Fur Seal Colony, before the quake a stream led up to a pool and waterfall where the seal pups would go while "Mum" went hunting and the walk up to see the seals was quite wonderful but the quake damaged that area and it is no longer accessible but with the uplifting of the sea bed it gave the seals a new home. During the re-construction of the road a car park and walkway has been built so viewing the seals is easier for us and there is less human interaction with the seals.
The shot of the day for me was the seal pup sleeping on the "Trucks Crossing" warning sign.
