I think this road across the Pennines had just opened after being blocked for three days. A few miles further on we passed the snow plough trying to prevent the driving snow from blocking the road again. Although the snow drifts must have been quite deep they could not compare with those places where many sheep have been buried and farmers in particular are facing a very hard time.
