Clearing back.
Good progress clearing back from the perimeter of R21/22. Having to decide which hawthorn bushes/trees to carry over and the occasional ash with low level epicormic shoots that might put on some more wood (fix carbon) before dying completely. Found a large sapling with slightly oak-like leaves which we need to identify. The yellow and purple colours are all on the invasive dogwood. Finished off hacking back wild clematis (old man's beard) in an area near the entrance: this is the first time we have done this and it will be interesting to see what effect it has next year. It was only a few weeks ago we realised that what we had thought was part of the canopy was in fact the leafy top of the old man's beard 8-10 metres above us. I suppose seeds will have been set so we may see only a small return next year, building again in subsequent years, depending on how vigorous the layered roots are after the above-ground parts have been severed.
