Giving that Others Might Live

This is Sutton's war memorial, unveiled on 1st November, 1922. Designed by Francis-Doyle Jones on the condition that he'd only make two others the same in the country. In the end, he only made one, in Elland, and because the Sutton stonemason took so long, the Elland one was unveiled first.

It is made from bronze and is 1.8m tall, on a 4.6m plinth of Dalbeatie granite, and stands in front of the town hall, where our entire family went to give blood today. By the end, the nurse was laughing at all these folk who had spent their lives in Brazil (not in a malaria zone, though the NHS doesn't make that distinction).
