IRIS FOETIDISSIMA

The seed pods of this native iris have split open in the last few days. I’ve no idea how these came into my garden but they grow in a really rough, dry bit of ground so they’ll be staying. It has a number of common names including stinking iris, roast beef plant, Gladwin iris or stinking Gladwin. Apparently it smells of slightly rancid meat but I can’t say I’ve noticed that. As you can see from the striking red of the berries it’s poisonous so no nibbling!
