Project 365 day 297: last remains

It's truly autumn in the garden now - the leaves are turning, the hedges are russet with hawthorn berries, and even the Japanese anemones are reduced to little pompom seed heads. I have picked the last cucumbers and probably the last courgettes, though a few tiny fruits are still trying to grow.   The pumpkins and squashes are all in, and P has harvested the onions and is continuing to dig potatoes. We have eaten all the cauliflowers. For the winter, we have beetroot, kale, cavallo nero and brussels sprouts, and the chard, romanesco and broccoli will continue for a little longer. The freezer is full of assorted greens and stewed fruit. The cucamelons are waiting to be pickled. I've made some jam, chutney and cordial, but not too much as we still had quite a lot from previous years.  I like the sense of winding down after a busy season, closing the curtains early, and being able to turn my attention to some of the many indoor jobs crowded out by the time needed to grow and preserve fruit and vegetables.
