Snitterfield
Ann was painting the spare room this morning so we didn't get out to The Farm for coffee until later this afternoon. By that time the place was heaving and after a quick look around we decided to go on to the village for a walk. I have wanted to walk up to the war memorial in Snitterfield for a while. It is on the outskirts of the village, and uphill all the way. Walking from the village is necessary as there is nowhere to park by there.
So I was pleased that I made it, following Ann who treated the whole thing as a pleasant stroll. The view from the mount was quite spectacular in the sunshine. At the base of the monument is a stone bench engraved with a quote from Shakespeare...." This England never did, nor never shall, lie at the proud foot of a conqueror" (King John, Act 5, Scene 7). I'm assuming this means post the Norman conquest of 1066! I've added the bench to the extras.
An observation, interesting and tragic, is that the names of those remembered in WW1 are listed in two long columns, the names from WW2 number just seven.
