Fairy club fungus

Yesterday's rain has made the fungi grow fast. Today's find is a fairy club fungus called Golden Spindle. They grow in spreading clumps on short grassland, I noticed they seem to prefer mossy, springy ground and they like growing along the top of the medieval ridge and furrow system. They're small and smooth, as thin as a matchstick, growing to between 2-5cm but I've not seen them higher than 2cm. It seems they have a bitter taste, although not poisonous - can't say I fancy trying! Just as I was heading home, I met a man with a bucket on the Common, he had collected a few wood blewits with their Halloweeny purple stems - he said they make the best mushroom soup you've ever tasted.
