Crackpots Mosaic Walking Trail
We did a lovely walk today around part of Dallowgill in North Yorkshire.
This enjoyable circular trail is illuminated with 22 mosaics depicting local scenes and flora and fauna which might be encountered along the route. The trail was created as part of a community project to celebrate the designation of Nidderdale as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The mosaics were made in 1997 by ‘The Crackpots’ from Kirkby Malzeard.
The mosaic in the main shot depicts a roman soldier, which is the only thing I would have been rather surprised to encounter on the walk.
The mosaic in the first extra depicts a potato house which is located alongside the ruins of the actual old local potato house. These structures were built for the storage of harvested potatoes so that they could be kept off the ground and dry. This potato house would have acted as a store for the small local community.
The four mosaics in the second extra depict a curlew, bluebells, a barn owl and a pheasant.
Dallowgill is an area we have never explored before, and it was really quiet and beautiful there.
