DIA de los MUERTOS: Day of the Dead
California has a large population of Mexican Americans, who celebrate
a special holiday today, called DIA de los MUERTOS. It follows
right after Halloween, but is very different. This holiday is all about
celebrating family members who have died. There is a joyous & respectful tone to this holiday, where revelers dress up in costumes, have parades, sing, visit cemeteries & enjoy traditional foods.
Sometimes family members make beautiful altars for their dead loved ones, that include photographs, favorite foods & beautiful flowers. I saw the altar in my Blip, floating in a small pond at the Descanso Gardens.
The intention is to remember all that is special about the lost love ones.
Last night I listened to a sleep story on the CALM APP about
people who journey to a small island in a lake in Mexico, where many family members are buried. On this day, the living take small boats to the island, to celebrate those who have passed, in a festival like atmosphere. It is thought the spirits of the dead can visit their loved ones during this
time.
Feliz dia de los Muertos....
