Oak apple

Just a short walk today even though the weather has been lovely. Not much to write home about but it was a nice walk. I noticed this growth on an oak tree and I’m sure we used to call it an oak apple when we were young. I did a bit of Googling and think it looks more like oak marble gall but I could be wrong. 
I planted some anemones so let’s see if they come up or not. Most of last years bulbs must have rotted in the ground as our garden will never be described as “free draining”.  How many years does it take to get soil like Monty’s on gardeners world???
