Finding My Bearings

By JustJuli

Herding cats!

Had mostly Year 7s today, hence my title!

The first two lessons involved me standing outside in a biting north wind for two hours - without a coat! - while they played in ‘round robin’ football tournaments. Many years ago I learnt the hard way that when PE teachers tell me that ‘the students know what to do and can sort themselves out’, it’s absolute nonsense, so I pick the team captains, sort the players into teams myself and organise each round’s team rotation - bish, bash, bosh, job done with no arguments allowed. The PE teachers told me afterwards that they’d all thought I was ‘brilliant’ and some of the students wanted me to be their new PE teacher, which may sound like great compliments but hopefully that doesn’t now mean I get all the PE lessons! Oh dear, nothing like being a victim of your own success!

Period three was a PSHE lesson on ‘self-esteem’ and then, in the afternoon, I had two drama classes. This lovely mask was on the teacher’s desk in the drama studio.

I’m really happy as it looks like I’ll be back at the same school next week, and thankfully there’s been no more mention of the receptionist job… but I’m definitely bringing my coat tomorrow!
