FIREWORKS NIGHT 2021
November 5th is when the British traditionally celebrate Guy Fawkes Night by setting off fireworks, lighting bonfires and so on.
This is to commemorate the time in 1605 when Fawkes and a band of Catholic plotters conspired to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
Immediately before his execution on 31 January, Fawkes fell from the scaffold where he was to be hanged and broke his neck, thus avoiding the agony of being hanged, drawn and quartered. He became synonymous with the Gunpowder Plot, the failure of which has been commemorated in the UK as Guy Fawkes Night since 5 November 1605, when his effigy is traditionally burned on a bonfire, commonly accompanied by fireworks.
I'm pretty sure that many people today rather wish he had succeeded – it's sometimes said that 'Guy Fawkes was the last person to enter parliament with honest intentions!'…
Wilson loves fireworks, and he loves sitting round a bonfire eating toasted marshmallows, telling ghost stories and drinking too much ant gin.
This year, however, he has decided NOT to have any fireworks, nor a bonfire, so as not to contribute unnecessarily to air pollution!
He and his little family are watching from the window as our neighbours let off their fireworks.
Then there will be hot soup with ant croutons and ant sprinkles, served with mulled ant gin to warm everyone up…
