Clitheroe Lock - Grand Union Canal - Lock 99

Today I went with a small Group on a cycle ride which included the most southerly part of the Grand Union Canal from Brentford to Hanwell where we had lunch at a lovely old pub - The Fox. This is a lock en route, no sign of any moving boats although there are quite a few narrow boats moored along this stretch. There is a huge contrast between the quiet towpath and the built up areas in Brentford ( where a huge new building project of high rise flats and new restaurants etc  is underway). Also we passed very near the M4 and A4. There are over 100 locks between Brentford and Birmingham including a flight of five at Hanwell. Difficult to imagine what it was like when it was such a busy transport system when constructed back in early 19C.

On the way back I had to change my route as the river had flooded into the road by the White Swan and along to Eel Pie island in Twickenham.
