Wemyss Castle.

Not as chilly and sunny as yesterday.  I spent most of the morning planting bulbs and weeding.  Only daffodils and allium left although scilla have still to arrive and there's  plenty of weeding and tidying left to do.   Had a long and enjoyable chat with the postie. We're pretty much on the same wave length so like the occasional chinwag.  Washed some clothes, had lunch and went down to West Wemyss to photograph.  The tide had just begun to go out and, for a moment, I thought there wasn't going to be a decent view of the castle but there was once I got onto the beach.  The castle dates from about 1421 but little of the early building remains. Most of the present castle dates from the 16th and 17th centuries.  It's best known as the place where Mary Queen of Scots first met her future husband Henry Darnley in 1565.  It's been in the hands of the Wemyss family since it was built and is still their private residence.  When I lived in the village Lady Victoria who created the Wemyss School of Needlework was still alive.  She had been a Lady in Waiting to the Queen Mother who was a regular visitor.  The cliffs on which the castle sits are riddled with caves some of which have a large collection of Pictish carvings.
