Old Exeter Inn
We stayed last night in Bodmin. This morning we started out for home. We stopped at Ashburton, on the Southern edge of Dartmoor, seeking, in vain, a cafe. However, we did find the Old Exeter Inn (apparently dating back to 1130) which appears to be an interesting pub and building. We were too early for the pub to be open, so we couldn't go inside, but according to the plaque on the outside wall, Sir Walter Raleigh was arrested here in 1603, accused of plotting against King James I. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London, and eventually beheaded in Westminster in 1618.
We drove on to Ottery St Mary, narrowly missing the annual burning tar barrel procession which takes place in its narrow streets every 5th November. Sounds potentially rather dangerous....as many old customs are. Still no sign of an open cafe.
Finally we stopped at Honiton, and had delicious coffee in The Boston Tea Party cafe, as we had on our journey to Cornwall last weekend.
Lots of autumnal colours to admire throughout our way back home. Lovely views of the Tamar from the road bridge, when we crossed from Cornwall to Devon.
